Osmo Polyx-Oil

Osmo Polyx-Oil, also commonly known as hard wax oil, is one of the best finishes you can apply to original antique floorboards. Unlike varnish, which sits on top of the floorboards, Osmo hard wax oil penetrates and nourishes the timber, much like a moisturiser for the skin. Another benefit of using Osmo oil is its ease of repair for light scratches. To hide a light scratch, simply brush a small amount of Osmo oil into the affected area and buff it off with a lint-free cloth. If you don't have Osmo oil on hand, even something as simple as butter can be used in a pinch.

Cosmetically, Osmo hard wax oil enhances the grain of the timber, making the tightly-grained antique timber of old floorboards look remarkable.

Osmo polyx oil is available in 4 finishes:

  • 3011 (clear Glossy)

  • 3032 (clear satin)

  • 3062 (clear, matt)

  • 3065 (clear semi-matt)

More information on the osmo floor oil finishes and osmo tints can be found here on the Osmo website.

The main alternatives to Osmo Polyx-Oil are floor finishing products such as Bona Traffic HD lacquer, which is excellent on both reclaimed and new flooring. Our experienced customers and floor fitters often fall into two camps; Team Lacquer or Team Hard Wax Oil. One of the main reasons some prefer Bona lacquer over Osmo hard wax oil is the drying time. If drying time is important, Bona lacquer can dry in half the time it takes for hard wax oil to set.

Osmo Polyx-Oil Pros:

  • Easy scratch repair

  • Nourishing for the floorboards

  • Available in clear and tinted finishes

  • Durable and hardwearing

  • Enhances the wood’s appearance

  • Microporous finish that doesn’t flake

  • Future applications can be applied directly over the old Osmo finish

  • Natural vegetable oils and waxes so better for the environment than lacquer or varnish.

Cons:

  • Drying times can be as long as 9 hours
